It's 1873. As the Riga Latvian Society marks its fifth anniversary, its members bold Latvian enterpreneurs, writers and publishers decide to organize the first Latvian Song Festival. Despite any obstacles imposed by the Tsarist Empire, within half a year they must prepare a repertoire and invite choirs from Vidzeme and Kurzeme to join together in Riga. Meanwhile, in the countryside, men and women are contemplating how wise it would be to leave their sowing fields just to go and sing.
